About Us - Chaplain

Chaplaincy at Shellharbour Anglican College

At Shellharbour Anglican College we believe that by understanding who God is, we understand who we are and make sense of the world we live in. We believe that in Jesus we find forgiveness, our identity, our value, our purpose and our hope.  It forms the foundation on which all else is built.

For this reason, all students at College are given an opportunity to explore a Christian worldview, though the teachings of the Bible. This happens informally as our staff demonstrate and discuss their own faith in the various curriculum areas and formally through Chapel services, Christian Studies classes and ‘CRU’ voluntary lunchtime groups.

Chapel Services

All students at the college attend Chapel services weekly. At Chapel students sing songs, hear parts of the Bible explained, play amusing and fun games and are exposed to the teachings of Christianity in a vibrant and non-threatening way.

Christian Studies classes

Likewise, all students attend a Christian studies class on a weekly basis. In the Junior School these are generally presented by the class teacher, whilst in high school these are taught either by the Chaplain or another staff member. These are an opportunity to think more deeply in classes about the teachings of Christianity, its relevance for life today and importance of having an accurate understanding of who Jesus is.

CRU Lunchtime Groups

Each Wednesday lunch voluntary Christian (we call them CRU) groups operate for K-2, 3-6 and 7-12 age ranges. These are enthusiastic, informal meetings of students who want to know more about Christianity or be encouraged in their own Christian walk and many others who just love being part of a welcoming group and having loads of fun at lunchtime. They are overseen by the Chaplain, coordinated by a team of passionate, creative and dedicated teachers with the help of appointed student leaders.

Our Chaplain

The college Chaplain is Mr. Daniel Odell who has been serving in this role since 2015. As well as being a trained teacher with experience in several schools, Dan has also studied the Bible and devoted many years to explaining it to kids and teenagers.

He’s passionate about helping the all members of the college community to understand the hope that Christianity offers through Jesus and helping students of all beliefs to engage with and respond to the message of the Bible.

For pastoral visits, or a conversation over a cup of coffee about your questions of faith or spirituality, or to know more about how our Christian faith plays out in school life, contact Dan at the college or via email, at dodell@shellharbourac.nsw.edu.au
